RoyalMeowdoku rules

  • One crowned cat per row.
  • One crowned cat per column.
  • One crowned cat per coloured region.
  • No touching. Cats cannot be next to each other, including diagonally.

Choose Place cat, Mark empty or Erase, then tap a square. Tapping again with the same marking tool removes that mark. Right-click to toggle an X. Keyboard: arrow keys move; C or P places a cat, X marks empty, E or Backspace clears, H opens a Hint, and U or Ctrl/Cmd+Z undoes a move.

Journey, daily challenge and free practice

Journey offers 100 numbered levels in ten chapters, from First Crown to Coronation. Chapters begin with warm-ups as board sizes increase. Daily challenge gives everyone the same 8 × 8 board, renewed at midnight UTC. Free practice lets you choose 5 × 5 through 9 × 9 boards and a difficulty: Easy through 7 × 7, or Medium and Hard at every size. Use New puzzle to keep playing. Every board is checked for exactly one solution.

Difficulty comes from the techniques a board needs. Easy boards fall to simple row, column and region cleanup; Medium boards need locked lines or pairs of regions; Hard boards need shared-conflict reasoning or a short proof by contradiction.

Three moves that solve most RoyalMeowdoku boards

  1. Small regions first. A region that spans one row or column claims it; X out the rest of that line.
  2. Count locked lines. If two regions fit inside the same two rows, no other region can use those rows.
  3. Look for blocking cats. If placing a cat somewhere would remove every option from another region, that square is an X.

Our tips guide walks through these with diagrams. The same techniques power the cat puzzle journey and Dogdoku.

Which board size to pick

  • 5 × 5 and 6 × 6: quick warm-ups. Most cells resolve from simple row, column and region cleanup, so they are good for learning to mark X marks quickly and accurately.
  • 7 × 7 and 8 × 8: the classic size range. You will usually need at least one locked pair of regions before the board opens up.
  • 9 × 9: longer boards with more regions to track. Expect to combine several locks, and use a hint if you find yourself guessing.

If a board feels impossible, it is not: every one has a single solution that can be reached by logic. Undo back to the last move you were sure of, clear any guesses, and look again at the smallest regions that are still open.

The Queens and Star Battle family

RoyalMeowdoku follows the same placement rules as Queens, a one-star version of Star Battle, a classic pencil puzzle where each row, column and region holds a fixed number of stars that may not touch. Mobile games such as Meowdoku and the various Dogdoku apps use the same rules with animals instead of crowns. Our version uses crowned kittens. Whatever the piece, the placement reasoning is identical.
